A Guide to Planning a Professional Video Production
Some tips to get you started on video content creation.
Brands are using video to meet the need of the increasing demand in filmed creative content from clients. 88% of individuals prefer informative videos to reading text and, as a result, the market for video production companies is on the rise. However, producing video content may be more arduous than you think.
How to plan a professional production:
Develop a script
The first step to creating video content is coming up with a script. The script is your number one guide, off of which you can plan and build the rest of your production. A good script ensures that every part of your film will deliver a concise message.
Create a storyboard
A storyboard is an organized, graphic depiction of your script. It is the visual plan of your shots. A storyboard assures that you have captured sufficient footage and that you have a pictorial guide to follow when editing the footage together.
Make an equipment checklist
Equipment checklists are imperative when heading to set. It can be difficult to remember every battery, diffuser, and extension cord needed. You never want to find yourself in a position where you have traveled to set and forgotten an essential piece of gear. A checklist ensures you won't leave anything behind.
Obtain permits
Permits, depending on the location, are usually necessary. They can be acquired through the local film office. If you opt out of shooting with a permit, the police or a security guard may need to escort you from the premises, ruining your shoot.
Check power availability
You must come prepared with knowledge of your equipment, specifically its need for power. If shooting at an outdoor location, there likely won't be access to outlets. You must think of equipping yourself with diffusers and tools of the like to manipulate the sunlight. All batteries must be charged the night before a shoot and be sure to bring plenty of spares.
Some Additional Tips:
- Always provide food and drinks for your cast and crew. Organize a table set up with a spread of options. This area will be known as craft services and will keep your crew and talent content on a long day of filming.
- Create a call sheet . A call sheet contains the entire list of cast and crew and informs them what time they are needed on set. It also schedules the shoot, recording what scenes will be shot where and when.
- Use the right equipment . The equipment required will vary based on the purpose of the video, but always ensure your lights and cameras will be able to convey the right tone for the content.
- Outsource your editing as it will save you time and effort. A professional video editor will create a master video from your shoot.
